Overcoming Recurring Burnout as a Neurodiverse Entrepreneur
As a business coach for neurodiverse women, I help my clients achieve more peace, a more regulated nervous system, and more profit in their business. In this video, I discuss the two main reasons why neurodiverse entrepreneurs experience recurring burnout and how to break the cycle.
Reason 1: Incompatible Mainstream Business Advice
Mainstream neurotypical business advice is often not compatible with neurodiverse minds. This incompatibility can lead to overwhelm, burnout, and financial struggles. Some examples of incompatible advice include:
- The 40-hour workweek: Neurodiverse individuals may not be able to work 40 hours a week, especially at a screen, while maintaining their health.
- Relying on social media for consistent revenue: Social media does not provide the consistent income that neurodiverse entrepreneurs need to pay bills and live well.
- Overly complicated systems: Neurodiverse entrepreneurs may struggle to implement complex tech or copywriting systems, leading to feelings of failure and imposter syndrome.
Reason 2: Masking in Business
Many neurodiverse individuals become self-employed to escape neurotypical work environments that don't allow them to thrive. However, they often continue to mask their true selves in their own business, contributing to burnout. Examples of masking include:
- Offering appointments at times that don't align with their energy levels
- Engaging in face-to-face meetings or Zoom calls when phone calls are preferred
- Not asking for help when needed due to shame or hyper-independence
Unmasking and Trusting Your Intuition
To break the cycle of recurring burnout, neurodiverse entrepreneurs must unmask in their business and trust their intuition. This may involve:
- Communicating their preferred working hours and methods to clients
- Being open about their needs and limitations
- Seeking help when needed without shame
Personal Experience and Success
As a neurodiverse entrepreneur, I experienced burnout for four years until I completely unmasked in my business and stopped following mainstream business advice. By embracing my unique needs and strengths, I have now been burnout-free for 14 months and have a successful business.
Neurodiverse entrepreneurs are capable of success when we reject incompatible mainstream advice and unmask in our business. By trusting our intuition and embracing our unique needs, we can break the cycle of recurring burnout and build a thriving business that values our strengths.
